Created in an era where advancements in HEAT penetration made the armor race appear nonviable, the Leopard instead focuses on its gun and mobility, being only lightly armored to defend against heavy auto-cannons rather than opposing tank shells. |

History
Designed by Germany, the Leopard 1 is built with firepower and mobility in mind. With production starting in 1964, over 4,500 units were built until it was phased out in 1984, to make way for the Leopard 2. Because of stringent restrictions, only NATO allies were able to legitimately purchase the vehicle. Although it is still in operation around the world, the German Army discontinued their use of the Leopard 1 in favor of more modern vehicles. It has faced combat in Southeastern Europe, as well as Western Asia.
