History[edit | edit source]

Development of the Mitsubishi Type 90 began in 1977 shortly after the introduction of the Type 74 as it was seen as outdated compared to it's contemporaries. The initial prototype was planned to use a domestically produced 120mm cannon made by Japan Steel Works (later to be developed and used on the Type 10) which showed favorable results when compared to the Rheinmetall 120mm. However due to budget constraints it was decided that the latter would be produced under licensing. After it was decided that the RH 120mm would be used a second set of prototypes were produced in a set of 4 tanks and further testing was done on these prototypes. After favorable results were achieved; the type 90 was put into service in the JGSDF in the year 1990. Due to the Type 90's heavy weight it was restricted to service in Japan's north island of Hokkaido in fear that the Type 90 would break infrastructure such as bridges and roads. A big misconception is that the newer Type 10 is replacing the Type 90, but the Type 10 is being built to replace the Type 74 to fill the gap in the limited serviceability of the Type 90.
