Russia's attempt to create the most advanced tank of the time, the T-64AV uses steel and fiberglass composite on the upper glacis, with composite inserts in the heavily armored steel turret front, offering some protection against HEAT shells. Additional protection was provided by the Kontakt-1 ERA. |

History[edit | edit source]
This Soviet-era main battle tank was created as an update to the T-64 and eventually became the basis for modern Soviet tanks. With production commencing in 1963 and active service in 1967, over 13,000 units have been produced. The T-64A was able to remain a secret for many years, thanks in part to its limited presence in combat and similar appearance to the T-72. This is a late modification that received multiple upgrades over the original T-64A, including the Kontakt-1 ERA kit.
