Like the M50, the M51 inherited ts armor features from the M4 Sherman. The steel hul and turret offered protection against small caliber ammunition, but were vulnerable against modern anti-tank weapons. |

History
Class: Medium Tank
Developed: 1961
Service: 1962-1973
Vehicles Built: cca 180
Operators: Israel, Chile
The story of the M51 begins where the M50 left off. After the end of Operation Kadesh (the Suez Crisis of 1956), the Arab armies were, once again, left bewildered and in disarray with many of their armored vehicles destroyed. But after the shock wore off, the Soviet Union was more than happy to provide a helping hand in exchange for political influence. Only this time, the Arabs would also receive a far deadlier opponent than the old T-34, the T-54 Medium Tank that outclassed the M50 completely.
The growing Soviet influence along with the general low production rate of the M50 forced the Israelis to once again turn to the French for help and the French developed what would become known as the M51. The M51 was, once again, a Sherman with a modified turret (that was the larger T23 version that originally housed the 76mm M1 series gun), armed with the French 105mm D-1508 L/51 cannon (not the D-1504 L/44, as many sources incorrectly state).
With the exception of the gun (and the turret with even more prominent extension in the rear), the M51 was largely similar to the M50 and served in two major conflicts – the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War. However, despite its upgraded cannon, the tank was considered to be obsolete in both conflicts and by 1973, it was mostly replaced by modified Israeli Centurions and Pattons. The remaining vehicles were scrapped or sold in 1979 to Chile.
