The Abrams Main Battle Tank is the current service MBT of the U.S. Army and several other countries. It was developed in the 1970s to replace the aging Patton series in American service. Unlike the failed MBT-70 project, the downfall of which was the widespread use of experimental technologies along with an extremely high price tag, the Abrams was designed to use modern but affordable and reliable components. What made it different from the Patton series was the use of Chobham composite armor and a gas turbine for propulsion, earning it the nickname "Whispering Death".
The M1A1 AIM (Abrams Integrated Management) is an improved version of the main and, at the same time, the most iconic version of the Abrams. Between 1997 and 2012, some 4000 U.S. service tanks were basically overhauled to a brand-new condition and upgraded with a new Forward-Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) sensor suite, an external infantry phone, a thermal imager for the 12.7mm heavy machinegun and some new communication equipment. Variants of this vehicle with and without Depleted Uranium armor inlays exist. Australia purchased 59 of these vehicles in 2006 and Morocco purchased a similar variant called M1A1 SA in 2015.
