History
Class: Infantry Fighting Vehicle
Developed: 1974-1980
Service: 1980+
Vehicles Built: total est. 30000+
Operators: Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact and other roughly 30 countries
The BMP-2 was the second major production variant of the original BMP with its turret replaced by one carrying a 30mm autocannon. The original 73mm gun was large, but it had serious flaws and was not really effective against tanks. Additionally, one of the lessons learned from the war in Afghanistan was that in order to be effective in cities and mountains, Soviet AFVs need more gun elevation. And, last but not least, when facing the AirLand Battle doctrine, the Soviets found themselves in need of additional anti-helicopter firepower. As a result, the 73mm 2A73 Grom cannon was replaced by a 30mm 2A42 autocannon with excellent gun elevation. Much like the BMP-1, the BMP-2 was produced in relatively large numbers in the Soviet Union and outside of it as well.
