The BMP-1P was the result of the Soviet Union's efforts to modernize the BMP-1, which has been mass-produced since 1966. This infantry fighting vehicle featured several modernizations, not the least of which being an upgraded ATGM launcher. The BMP-1P replaced its predecessor in 1979, and many BMP-1's were upgrade to the new standard; the BMP-1P also inspired a number of variants. The vehicle was widely exported and is still used to this day.
