History[edit | edit source]
Class: Infantry Fighting Vehicle
Developed: 1961-1964
Service: 1966+
Vehicles Built: 20000 in the Soviet Union, 17000 in Czechoslovakia, total est. 40000+
Operators: Cca 50 countries in total, including the Soviet Union, the entire Warsaw Pact, China
Much like the T-55 Medium Tank, the BMP-1 became one of the symbols of Soviet military might. When it was introduced, it was the most heavily armed IFV in the world and outclassed western designs so much that it started a revolution, resulting in various heavier NATO IFVs such as the Marder or the Bradley. The production in the Soviet Union ran between 1964 and 1983, in Czechoslovakia it was produced until 1987. It was used by the entire Warsaw Pact, widely exported and used in pretty much all conflicts around the globe. Despite the design being more than 50 years old by now, thousands are still in active service, mostly in poor third world countries. Like the BMD series, however, their combat value is low.
