History[edit | edit source]

Built by the Soviet Union, this infantry fighting vehicle was designed as a calculated response to the future hazards of war from nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Production started in 1966, and over 16,000 units have since been built, with the People's Republic of China producing unauthorized copies since 1986. Popular with many governments, the BMP-1 has primarily seen conflict in Eastern Europe and Western Asia.
